Complex Systems & Strategic Foresight(s)

This week I’m taking an intensive course at the University of Houston in Strategic Foresight with Dr. Peter Bishop, Dr. Andy Hines, and other guest lecturers, along with possibly the smartest group of people I’ve ever interacted with from all over the world.

This is part of my journey from provisional to full membership in the Association of Professional Futurists. I’m also studying change management from a psychological perspective; “futurists” are “clinicians of change” from a sociological perspective.

Just a few of the many topics in the whirlwind here: systems thinking, complexity science, game theory, change management, disruptive innovation, economic systems, political theory, etc. My brain hurts!

The mantra here: “A system’s behavior is a function of it’s structure.” And today’s sticky quote, which I’ve heard before but processing in new ways: “Every system is perfectly designed to get the results it gets” (Paul Batalden).

The slide image is from Donella Meadows, and I’m pleased to see some support for my work’s focus: mindset change.
